Trauma is referred to as a deeply disturbing and distressing event. Trauma can have long lasting impacts on mental health and wellness. Trauma can be anything from a life threatening event, such as violent assault or a continuous abuse (intimate partner violence, childhood abuse and sexual assault). Trauma can also include experiencing a frightening car accident or witnessing something horrible on television. (9/11, War)
Trauma can have a negative impact on mental health, physical health, social, emotional, spiritual well being and overall functioning. Trauma can either be acute (single incident), chronic (prolonged, such as intimate partner violence), or complex (multiple and varied traumatic events and experiences).
It is important to address trauma, as
unresolved trauma can often result in increased emotions, such as irritability, overeactivity and a need for control. Often times, trauma and PTSD can be accompanied with feelings of shame and guilt, which may trigger unhealthy coping habits such as misuse of alcohol, drug use, denial, isolation and shutting down.
Processing trauma can be an extremely difficult and uncomfortable process. Simultaneously, it can be the most brave and courageous thing you've ever done. It is normal to have fear... but you've come this far. There is a strength in facing what happened to you and voicing how it felt to someone you can trust, someone safe and someone who can hold space for your pain.
