Online therapy services are defined as providing psychotherapy remotely, such as video, teleconference or via phone. It is also sometimes called Telehealth, Telepshychology, Telemedicine, or Telemental Health and Teletherapy.
Online therapy can treat a wide variety of disorders and take place in the convenience and privacy of your own home or safe space. Online services increased vastly during the COVID-19 pandemic and in response to those who had difficulty securing healthcare. Also, a demand for remote services increased due to the overwhelm on service usage and on mental health providers. Since then, we have continued the use of online services for many medical issues.
Online therapy services are now widely used in psychotherapy and can benefit clients by providing meaningful and successful outcomes for many disorders in an easily accessible, yet intimate way.
Online therapy can provide clients limited due to location, a wide variety of options. This modality can also help you quickly find the most qualified professionals for your situation.
It can sometimes be challenging to find resources in your area or the right fit in therapy. Online, you can use your desktop computer, laptop, iPad or even your phone .. or you can switch between them if need be, which offers more convenience and flexibility.
If you are a busy professional who works late, a mom transporting kids to activities, or someone living with physical limitations, Online therapy can be a beneficial way for you to work on whatever you are struggling with.
While there is always risk when using technology, I take increased privacy measures to reduce unauthorized access to our sessions, privacy and confidential data.
First, I only use HIPAA compliant software and communication measures. I also do not store any of your information in any cloud storage. I am in a private location, where no one can hear sessions, or walk in unexpectedly and free from excess noise or distractions.
Next, I make sure it is safe and confidential on your part. This means we discuss confidentiality ahead of time . We take steps to help you protect your confidentially such as inuring you have a space that is private, where no one can overhear your conversation and wearing headphones or earbuds, if necessary.
Online therapy can be a effective way to navigate mental health issues. Many clients have been with me for years and have acclimated to virtual sessions very successfully.
Many also ask if virtual sessions are "easy "or if they need to be at expert technological competency levels. The answer is no! No expertise needed and yes...it's easy! I can also help you every step of the way, if technology issues arise and to troubleshoot problems quickly should they happen in session.
Online therapy works great for a wide variety of populations, however, it is not appropriate for high risk or crisis situations, such as active suicidality. In cases where risk is a consideration, a higher level of care is necessary. Online therapy is also not the best fit for someone with very slow or poor internet speed or access or without a private and secure location.
Also, due to licensing laws, I can only provide services to those who reside in the State of California.
